Would I read the book?
Would I? Fuck YEAH. While I”m not sure that the written text can do the action scenes justice, I’m sure that it will more than make up for it by going more in-depth and developing the back story of this entire thing. I, for one, would like to see a book series detailing the rise and fall of the Jaeger project, from the eyes of the many people involved in it. You can even introduce new characters and new Jaeger. I’m getting happy goosebumps at the mere idea of it, even though it’s improbable.
I also want to know more about that hot Russian pilot (I mean the woman) as well as the Wei Tang triplets. I’d like to delve more into Herc and Chuck Hansen’s father-son relationship. I’d like more detailed descriptions of the affectionate and respectful tension between Pentecost and Mako (and I don’t have to deal with Idris Elba, bless him, who switches from a British accent to an American accent randomly throughout the movie). I’d like more of Raleigh’s life after his brother’s death. I’d like to see more of Geiszler and Gottlieb’s odd couple adventures in the lab space.
Hell, if they have a Hannibal Chau miniseries, I’d buy it.
The book will likely have promise, largely thanks to the strong concept already present in the film.
My faith in Hollywood, it seems, has been somewhat restored by Pacific Rim. If there’s one thing that this proves to me, it’s that I actually have low standards for movies (despite my Man of Steel rants pointing evidence to the contrary). As far as I’m concerned, you have to follow the rules of story – even if the story lacks depth. Forget high-concept stuff where everything is a metaphor. Just tell the damn story, make it look good and make sure that it makes some kind of sense. I don’t care if it’s predictable or if its characters are bland or shit like that. As long as the plot moves forward in a way that makes sense, I’m okay with that.
I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
PS: To those who are wondering why the UN decided on walls instead of Jaegers, I have to say…yeah, that bothered me too. On the other hand, it’s EXACTLY what bean counters do right? Make decisions based on money without really understanding a thing?
Pacific Rim is still showing; please PLEASE watch it and let me know what you think. 🙂
